Industry Connect 101 : Breaking Into The Music

Written By Evan L. Jackson

The number one question in Entertainment is 'how do I get my big break?' or better yet 'How do I make it?'. Ironically enough it isn't a one time deal. To truly make it in the industry it takes consistency, longevity and most notably a brand. That's why it was so impressive to attend the Industry Connect 101 : Breaking Into The Music presented by Los Angeles Film School. Featuring music industry legend Steve Lobel, Media Personality Jen De Leon, A&R Epic Records Executive Zoe Young, and Casting Producer of The Four Joshua Heart. This variety of music minds in the building brought a healthy perspective of what it means to be successful in music.  Steve Lobel adhered to the mindset of emotionally connecting with your fan base through your art and love for the craft with that type of will he believes you'll always win through. Zoe Young gave us insight on what execs are looking for and a look on the cutting edge of the music biz. Joshua came from the side of one of the hottest shows on TV, The Four - what they look for might be a 180 degrees from what you are giving but that's not the point, is it? It's what type of career can you carve for yourself and how authentic you can be with it. That's what makes a brand, that what keeps you stay in the now, and that's how you break into the music industry.

Lost in the midst of covering celebrities is the humanity, so I thought it was ingenious when Holistic Healer and Spiritual Educator Treasure of Treasure Gemz decided to host The Lashed Ladies In LA Luncheon in honor of her best friend Blac Chyna. You can see how the two would connect: both great mothers, business woman at heart, not afraid to speak their mind and most of all compassionate souls. I mean if your best friend doesn't support you like this than who will? The Luncheon was also a celebration of Women Empowerment and a focus on women in business. With author and motivational speaker Arie Rose telling my Correspondent Cherish how home sick she was because the yearning for her own daughter but we could see she found solace in the women gathered strength from her story.

The biggest surprise was when Amber Rose made it an appearance but it shouldn't come as a shock: real recognizes real and successful women always stay together. At first modest on the mic and not showing any signs of speaking Amber felt compelled to speak not about her self, but selflessly about about the bond between Blac Chyna, Treasure, and her self. Once again the love is clear, between them all, three business woman who do the thankless work of being a mother. That appreciation and respect among them all was a site to see and needs to be featured more. Black women have always and will continue to support each other no matter how mediums, media, or other formats portray them as. And when it comes to women empowering each other other that was such a warm feeling in the room. The energy was positive and it was fun to be there because you can learn game from women who have made a success of themselves and be in a room full women going places.

In this era one of the conversations we're having is if Social Media is a gift or a curse when it comes utilizing it as a tool - professionally for career purposes and personally to seek meaningful or arguably equal, meaningless relationships. It is all for show? Well Director Romel Rose tells us his take through his film "Because Of The Internet".

Along with his Rose Productions crew, Romel wrote, directed, and Starred in this film about a self-indluging 20-something who faces the harsh reality that his social media presence is the main problem stunting his progress. I won't give too much away but Romel dives deep into the psyche of what it means to be wrapped up in the world of Social Media through his character.

A very topical and on point subject for today which even seeped into the Q&A hosted by Project Pit head hancho Carlton Epic, after the premiere of the film, which turned into a full on discussion : If it's not on Social Media does it count? Some said you need stay on Social Media to be relevant for the sake your career others scoffed at that idea because they feel like talent should win out. If you don't show your significant other on Social Media is that disrespectful? Some adhere to privacy while others thought it was a clear sign of being ashamed of your partner. Romel didn't just create a movie he created a conversation piece, a lightening rod on the litmus test of how hot you are in your respective field to the depths of how deep is your love.

The main theme of the evening though was love yourself and from there you can grow. Not quite separating himself from his character he said he use be him, a self involved - superficial socal medite but then it clicked for Romel, this isn't a good way to get ahead, to make a real success out of your life - so he turned his cautionary tale into a film. He admitted to still having his vein moments every now and then like everyone else but now he's a lot more conscious. The morals of the film you can say is be mindful of the people who actually love you, follow through with real life goals that you set for self, and don't t swipe away your self worth seeking that click or like.

As I go from event to event covering the latest in Entertainment - one tends to see familiar faces. And with introductions and those making their foray into the industry, you realize the consistent power players tend to take their craft more seriously than others. That's absolutely the case with Hip Hop Artist EnimaL who was introduced to me by his Publicist Suria of Sanguine PR months ago at a Her Hip LA showcase. With an impressive client she seemed eager to have EnimaL at the forefront, maybe because she knew had star quality. With his impending album coming 'Comma Club:Bottle Muzik' dropping I embarked on his album release party. With calm vibe EnimaL wasn't over anxious, he was ready - almost like he knew it was his time.

They say behind every great man is a great woman, in this scenario the women that should be at the forefront are Suria, Simone Taylor of Voodo Guru, and Her Hip Hop LA founder All Access Jas who put together the release party. All credit to EnimaL for his success but the women on his team & the women who help created the platform for the night deserve to be applauded. The vision for your brand is heightened when you have the right fit - combined with his passion for the game and the people he surrounds himself with you can definitely see EnimaL going far.
